Lady Hawks take on Mandeville in volleyball
October 1, 2019
Archbishop Hannan High School Lady Hawks volleyball team were on the road and took on Mandeville on Wednesday, September 18th.
Going into the game, they knew it was not going to be an easy win. During their practice prior to the game they worked on passing difficult, hard driven balls, and passing hard severs.
“I knew they were a good team, but I knew if we played well we would give them a really good challenge and we had a chance to win.” Head Coach Rebekka Bonnaffee said, “ but again I know that they are a good 5A school that has a good team.”
As the game was gearing up, the lady hawks were looking good in warm-ups. Many of the skills and techniques that were worked on at practice the day before were being executed.
The game started off, and seemed to be quite the challenge for the Hannan volleyball team.
“I think it is because we made a lot of errors.” Sydney Goodreaux senior libero said, “We weren’t talking and playing as a team.”
The hawks lost the first match off the game. Following that they did not come out as strong as we hoped in the second match. The lost that match also.
It was now crunch time and they would of had to win the next three matches against Mandeville to win the game entirely.
“Just leave it all out there. Don’t let anything drop, play till the whistle blows,” Goodreaux said. “We were competing. If we could just stay a little more focused, a little more consistent, that we could take a game from them at least, if not three.” Bonnaffee said.
As they entered the third match they came out of the huddle with hope. They were not just going to let Mandeville win without a fight.
The hawks fell behind towards the end of the game, it was time for Sydney to go back to the serving line. Sydney was given a place on the court by Coach Bonnaffee and she scored. This happened a few more times.
“I just told myself that my team needed me and I just needed to get the ball in the court and I took a deep breath and I served,” Goodreaux said.
The lady hawks got back in the game, but ended up losing a great fight 25-23.
“As far as our play goes we made huge strides,” said Bonnaffee. “In the end, our serve receive was better. I think we got over a hump, because we didn’t give up.”
