Hannan girl’s soccer looking to improve

November 27, 2017

The Archbishop Hannan girls soccer team started its season off with a great outcome in first few games, but aren’t satisfied and will continue to work hard to improve as the season goes on.

The Lady Hawks’ soccer team started out the season with a competitive schedule in the preseason such as Mount Carmel and Northshore to prepare them for the rest of the regular season games.

Their first game in the regular season was against East Jefferson and they won 4-0.

Although the team is starting off strong, several players say there is room for improvement.

“The team looking into the season is good. We are well put together and play well. However, many players are hurt coming into the season,” said freshman forward Mia Sernich. “I need to improve my control on the ball and becoming more confident in my playing.”

Sernich said the Hannan coaching staff knows what they need to do and are all very helpful in getting the team to achieve their goals.

Zoë Schuster, freshman central midfielder, said this year the team is stronger and has a lot of confidence heading into the upcoming season, but they need improvement working on different strategies and ways to attack the ball.

“The team definitely needs to improve on finishing on the attacking half, which is scoring, because we’ve had a lot of missed opportunities and working on that during practice will definitely help us during a game,” said Schuster.

Schuster said the team needs to have the right mentality and the confidence in order to do well this season.

“We just need to have the mentality that we want to win and that we are going to win,” Schuster said.
The girls soccer team is a young but strong team. Guerin was moved up to varsity in the middle of her eighth grade season last year.”

Guerin said her experience from last year has really helped her improve and made her ready for the upcoming season.

“Being on varsity last year was really kind of intimidating because everybody was older but after I played my first game, I played and worked well with the rest of the team. But my goal is to score more this year, which I already have so I’m just working on the consistency of it,” Guerin said.

The goal for the girls soccer season is winning the state title of Division 3.

Kara Poche, junior, said the team needs to just stay focused on their goal and working hard during practice.

“Our main strategies are to stay focused and tackle each game with importance and not take any game lightly,” said Poche.
