Last month, a team of 8th graders at Archbishop Hannan won “Best in State” in the Verizon Innovative Learning App Challenge. This contest received more than 1,800 submissions. The team of seven Hannan students consisting of 8th graders Nicolas Gagliano, Daniel Lowentritt, Alston Snow, Cole Bartlett, Kate Rush, Zoe Eymad, and Logan Jeansonne gave up lunch periods and time after school to create the app “Study Buddy”. The goal of this challenge was to design an app that would solve a problem in our community. The students created Study Buddy to help students organize their study time based on their school and extracurricular schedule. The team wanted to make high school easier by creating this app for their peers. Mrs. Bartlett, the App Challenge moderator, says, “What is unique about this app is that it not only organizes study time but it also suggests methods of study based on the individual student’s learning style”. The team won $5,000 and tablets for every team member.
When asked about her experience facilitating the contest and working with these 8th graders, Mrs. Bartlett said, “I am so proud of the hard work and dedication that this young team put in during the research and implementation of project. I am most impressed with the way they were able to work together. I enjoyed watching them as they gained an understanding of the value of working in a group. They saw in their meetings and discussions the value of different perspectives, constructive deliberation, questioning, and critical analysis”.
AHHS Junior, Jameson Hussey, if responsible for directing the video, helping brainstorm ideas, filming, and editing the final cut. Jameson says, “It was probably one of the best experiences of my life, definitely above my first birthday”.
Logan Jeansonne, contributor to Study Buddy, says, “Well the process was easy and it was nice to be in the spotlight and do something this big only in 8th grade”.
The team was featured on Hawkeye TV as well as interviewed by WWL News.
